Why this site exists
In 2025, we started researching solar panels for our own homes. What we found was a mess — scattered Reddit threads, YouTube comment sections, outdated comparison sites designed to collect your phone number, and no single place that had honest, comprehensive information.
So we built what we wished existed.
What we won’t do
- Sell your phone number or email to installers
- Inflate savings figures to make solar look better than it is
- Pretend solar suits every home — sometimes it genuinely doesn’t
- Hide behind vague disclaimers instead of showing our working
- Tell you what to buy — we lay out the facts so you can decide
How we make money
IWantSolar is free to use. We earn a small commission when you buy a product through one of our affiliate links — Amazon, EcoFlow, and Sunstore. You pay the same price either way.
We also earn referral credit if you switch to Octopus Energy through our link. That’s it. No hidden revenue streams, no data brokering, no lead generation fees.
Every page with affiliate links includes a disclosure at the top. Full details on our affiliate disclosure page.
Our sources
Every claim on this site traces back to a named source. Our internal knowledge base compiles information from official standards and government data, including:
- MCS installation standards (MIS 3002, MCS 025, MCS 001)
- Ofgem SEG guidance and annual reports
- DESNZ solar deployment statistics (updated monthly)
- BS 7671:2018+A4:2026 (18th Edition wiring regulations)
- ENA G98/G99 grid connection standards
- GPDO 2015 Part 14 (permitted development rights)
- PAS 63100:2024 (battery fire safety)
Electricity rates are pulled from a verified data file updated weekly via automated checks against supplier tariff pages.
The tech behind it
IWantSolar uses real UK solar irradiance data broken down by region, actual energy tariff rates, and genuine product specifications. Our quiz generates personalised reports using calculations based on MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) guidance — the same standard professional installers use.
